'Welcome to Jurassic Coast' theme
When Ann McKenzie first came to Fortrose as a young farmer's wife in 1966 she was stunned by the dramatic scenery. Next month she and the south Catlins area promotions team will be showing it off for the Catlins Great Escape Coastal Walk.
The theme of the third annual walk on February 2 - this one along the Fortrose coastline to the lighthouse at Waipapa Point - is "Welcome to Jurassic Coast".
Mrs McKenzie said when she first arrived from Canterbury she was amazed by the blown-back trees, unique kelp and rock formations. Weekly visits to the Waipapa Point lighthouse on Sunday afternoons were a regular outing for farming families in the south Catlins community for decades, she said.
"It used to be the thing to do."
The lighthouse would be opened for walk participants to explore.
Tourism Catlins projects co-ordinator Kim Dodds said it was the first time the four-hour walk had been offered, thanks to Fortrose area landowners.
The walk will be followed by the "Two Little Boys Tour" - or the Catlins Great Escape Bike Journey - on April 20 and 21, which will take participants to locations highlighted in the Sarkies brothers' movie.
Participants of the coastal walk are asked to register online before February 2.
