This bartender knows how to pack a punchNICCI MCDOUGALL
Creating his own cognac and rum-based punch inspired by watching "a lot" of cooking shows has secured Invercargill bartender Santana Kawe-Waddick a spot in the finals of a nationwide bartender competition.
The Barluca Pizza Kitchen & Club bartender, who has been working in the industry for four years, is one of six finalists out of 482 entrants in the annual Beam Bar Legend competition.
Mr Kawe-Waddick was asked to answer a small questionnaire, complete an exam and create a 12-litre punch, he said.
His punch was a walnut-infused cognac with fig and cinnamon rum, lime juice, water, tea, nutmeg and manuka honey syrup.
"I watch a lot of cooking shows," he said.
Mr Kawe-Waddick said he loved being a bartender and was constantly learning - something he loved most about the job.
"I don't think there would be a bartender out there who knows everything."
The Beam Bar Legend grand final will be held in Auckland next week. The prize pack includes an all-expenses paid trip to a Beam distillery of the winner's choice, an expense card valued at up to $10,000 and a $5000 party for their bar.
