SIT hairdressing tutor locks in top award
'I love to be able to pass on my passion'LAUREN HAYES
Donna Bowman's students have always believed she is a cut above the rest, but now she has the trophies to prove it.
Ms Bowman has been named the national Hairdressing Industry Training Organisation (HITO) tutor of the year, a title which comes with two impressive trophies.
The Southern Institute of Technology tutor, who has been teaching for more than 20 years, said she was "chuffed" to win, especially as she was the only South Island finalist. "It's recognition for a lot of years of hard work. I'm still smiling from ear to ear."
Ms Bowman's students and colleagues had to submit letters of support, detailing her many achievements and outlining why she deserved to win.
Reading the letters was almost like sitting through her own funeral and hearing the eulogies, she said. "To me, that was a very humbling experience."
Ms Bowman was presented with the award at a dinner ceremony in Auckland, attended by more than 250 HITO members and their partners - all with very slick hairstyles, she said.
As well as the trophies, Ms Bowman took home a hamper filled with products and a $500 professional development voucher.
She plans to keep on teaching. "I love to be able to pass on my passion."
