McKnight and Brown store manager Lea Cockburn checks out some of the men's fashion on offer for the Christmas races at Ascot Park on Saturday week.

The Invercargill menswear business buys in stock especially for the province's biggest raceday of the year.

''The young guys are pushing the [fashion] boundaries.  Some know what they want and others are wanting advice,'' Ms Cockburn said.

Suits and hats have been in demand.

''There's a lot of hype out there for the Christmas races,'' she said.

Southland Racing Club president Sean Bellew received a phone call recently from a Christchurch couple interested in entering the Fashion in the Field at the Christmas races.

They took part n the same competition at the New Zealand Cup meeting in Christchurch last month, finishing in the top six (men) and 15 (women).

They plan to wear the same attire at Ascot Park.
