Queenstown chef wins accolade
Ambassador title for BatterburyHANNAH MCLEOD
A Queenstown chef has been named one of New Zealand's "culinary rockstars".
Ben Batterbury, head chef at the True South Dining Room at the Rees Hotel in Queenstown, was one of five chefs awarded the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Ambassador Chef title, and was the only one from the south.
Beef + Lamb NZ communications manager Kim Doran said 2014 was the second year Mr Batterbury had received the title.
The five ambassadors were chosen from 164 recipients of the 2014 Beef and Lamb Excellence Award.
"Restaurants apply for the excellence award, and we send assessors to each restaurant twice during the year, who anonymously judge a beef or lamb dish," Ms Doran said.
Their accolade was celebrated in Auckland yesterday, where each chef prepared a beef or lamb dish for a table of 20 media personnel at the Pah Homestead.
Ms Doran said each of the chefs would work with Beef + Lamb New Zealand during the year, doing cooking demonstrations at events in their areas.
Mr Batterbury's first demonstration will be at the Upper Clutha A&P Show in March, she said.
This year, a new event called the Ambassador Chef Series would be held at each chef's restaurant, but timetables were not yet available.
