Remember those lads Jon and Ponch who patrolled California's highways in the television show CHiPs back in the 70s and 80s?

Well thanks to the Los Angeles Auto Show, which runs next week, and the LA Design Challenge, we get a sneak peek into what the future might hold for the California Highway Patrol.

The challenge is part of the show annually and this year's task is creating a "Highway Patrol Vehicle 2025".

Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, Honda, General Motors and BMW have fronted up to the challenge, releasing pictures this week of their entries (see above) with the winner being announced next Friday (NZ time).

Honda's "CHiPs" Traffic Crawler, a hydrogen-powered three-wheeled motorcycle, sticks with the TV show's theme to point of wearing the "7 Mary 3" call sign belonging to Officer Jon Baker.

Other vehicles are the BMW Group DesignworksUS E-Patrol human-drone pursuit vehicle, General Motors Volt Squad, Honda's CHP Drone Squad, the Subaru SHARC (Subaru Highway Automated Response Concept) and the Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force.
