Giant ankle straps are back. Well, they never really disappeared, but this season they are wider than ever.

Now, we don't want to warn you off a fashion trend, but tread carefully here as the ankle strap shortens the leg by cutting it off at said strap point; and so it's a cankle-maker for wide legs and not-so-dainty ankles.

So why should you bother wearing them? Heels with ankle straps are more supportive. And although it defeats the purpose of the trend, if you're worried about kankles then simply hide the ankle with your trousers.

Some of our readers have also commented in the past that they love ankle straps for small feet, as the pitch of a high heel on a tiny foot gets dramatic and dangerous.

What's the trend about? Saint Laurent (previously known as Yves Saint Laurent - they've dropped the first bit) started the hype for the wide ankle strap with a dark Autumn/Winter collection that bordered on kinky.

And master of kink Christian Louboutin also does the ankle strap well, as did Kiwi Kate Sylvester in her last winter collection inspired by risky cult film The Secretary.

Basically, a thick ankle strap adds a touch of aggressive sex appeal to an otherwise simple heel.
