Sophie Gray has made a career out of showing people how to cook on a tight budget with her Destitute Gourmet series of cookbooks and cooking classes. Gray's mantra, which she developed to keep her own household afloat during a change in financial circumstances, is 'living well by spending less'.
With her latest book, Feed The Family For $15 Or Less (Random House, $35), Gray has also developed an app to streamline supermarket shopping and save money at the checkout. Find out what she keeps in her fridge.
WHAT FIVE FOODS WOULD I ALWAYS FIND IN YOUR FRIDGE?
Cheese, eggs, veg, butter and milk - very boring. I also usually have jars of gherkins, olives, capers, anchovies and such like but the staples are essential.
DO YOU HAVE A STANDBY RECIPE THAT USES ALL, OR SOME, OF THESE INGREDIENTS?
I cook every day and bake a lot, so there is rarely a day that those old faithful ingredients don't have a chance to prove their worth. Omelettes are popular in our house for a fast snack (with three out of the four of us, anyway).
WHAT'S THE MOST EXOTIC THING IN YOUR FRIDGE?
I have grown some quite exotic things in forgotten containers of leftovers but at the moment the most exotic thing is probably the bottle of pomegranate molasses.
WHAT DO YOU NEVER STORE IN THE FRIDGE?
Children? Luggage? Some people keep jam and chutney in the fridge but I find they are tasteless when cold so never put them in the fridge.
