Top prize for Central wine
Central Otago's rising pinot noir star Mondillo Vineyard has pushed aside more than 1500 other New Zealand wines to scoop the top trophy, Champion Wine of Show, at the country's prestigious Royal Easter Show wine awards at the weekend.
The champion Mondillo vintage scooped all the top prizes for its 2008 pinot noir, delighting the Queenstown-based owners of the tiny, 9-year-old Bendigo vineyard, Domenic and Ally Mondillo.
The Mondillo's experienced Cromwell-based winemaker, Rudi Bauer, also won the show's gold medal for Winemaker of the Year.
The triumph follows a run of top accolades for the Mondillo wine, which was also awarded a gold medal at the New Zealand International Wine Show, a silver at the London International Wine – the largest wine competition in the world – and a silver at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards last year.
The wine also collected the trophy for Champion Pinot Noir and was awarded a gold when the Royal Easter Show medal awards were announced this month.
Central Otago's Wooing Tree Blondie 2009 picked up the Champion Rose at the weekend awards.
