Pedestrian struck by car in Southland

A man who was hit by a car as he walked along a Southland road early this morning received minor injuries.

Senior Sergeant Maggie Windle, of Invercargill said the man was ''very very lucky'' and escaped with just minor injuries.

The man was hit at about 6.15am near Woodlands.

Emergency services were called to the scene, where they found the man, who was initially thought to be critically injured. 

Diversions were put in place as police closed parts of State Highway 1 at the Woodlands Cemetery Rd intersection and at the Heads Rd intersection.

The Serious Crash Unit were investigating.
