As rain hit most of the country Southland was drier than average last month.

Some regions had more than three times their normal April rainfall, although Northland, Gisborne and Southland were drier than average.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research's monthly climate summary says most of the South Island received above average rainfall.

Sunshine hours were down on average for much of the country, but not in a thin section of the southern South Island.

Many areas were drenched when the remnants of tropical cyclone Ita crossed the country in the middle of the month.
