The inpatient ward at Balclutha's hospital opened to new patients again yesterday after a gastro bug closed it down earlier in the week.

The outbreak of viral gastroenteritis at Clutha Health First mainly hit the ward's nursing staff, with at least eight nurses off work at one point.

Chief executive Ray Anton yesterday said that no new cases had been identified during the past 72 hours.

Visitors should use the hand gel stations when arriving and leaving, and anyone who had experienced vomiting or diarrhoea should stay away until they were clear of any symptoms for 48 hours.

Other departments were not affected by the outbreak.
