Dogs maul 45 sheep in Southland paddock
An Invercargill man has been left with 37 dead sheep after they were attacked by dogs at his urban property.
Selwyn Helms said his sheep were attacked in two separate incidents last week.
A total of 25 were killed and another 12 had to be put down. A further eight were alive but hurt, Helms said.
On Friday night one of his Kew Rd neighbours heard his sheep running around and contacted police. When they arrived they noticed two dogs running away, he said.
Helms was offering a cash reward to anyone who came forward with information about the dogs.
It was not the first time his sheep had been attacked by dogs, he said.
In 2012, he was forced to put one of his sheep down after it was mauled by two spaniels and a further three were attacked.
He said then it was the third time in a year that sheep on his land had been killed by dogs.
