Southlanders are being warned to be more vigilant online.

This week is Fraud Awareness Week, which this year focuses on online scams.

Last year New Zealanders lost more than $4.8 million to scams.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's Scamwatch website shows most of reported scams are online, with losses growing each year. Minister of Consumer Affairs Craig Foss said the scams could fool even the most tech-savvy.

"At any one time there are thousands of fraudsters online looking for victims."
