Strong, cold southwesterlies blew over power lines, sent trampolines into neighbouring yards and southern residents scurrying for cover.

Trees were blown onto power lines in Otatara yesterday, causing an electricity outage at 9.30am.

A PowerNet spokesman said 672 Otatara customers were affected by the outage.

The company restored electricity to 522 customers by 10.45am with the remaining 150 customers' power restored at 2pm.

High winds were the likely cause of power being cut to 33 customers in Fortrose.

The winds also brought wintry showers and sleet to Invercargill and other parts of Southland and Otago.

MetService reported snow showers affected the ranges and some higher roads, with light flurries down to 400 metres.

Farmers are advised that the combination of wintry showers, low temperatures and gale-force winds will put stress on stock.
