A Cromwell resident has lost $4000 to a computer scam.
Police are advising people to watch out for a scam that involves a Microsoft "representative" calling and offering a refund for a recently bought product.
Sergeant Simon Paget said the ruse appeared legitimate because the victim might have recently bought an item from Microsoft.
"In this case, the victim has been stung to the tune of $4000 and now cannot access their computer as the scammers have locked them out."
Anyone subject to such calls or emails should call police or go to netsafe.org.nz, which was an excellent resource for keeping people safe online, Paget said.
