State Highway 6 has reopened after being blocked by a major rockfall between Makarora and Lake Hawea last week.

The road was closed on Thursday.

Contractors used a helicopter with a monsoon bucket to sluice the rockfall, allowing the road to be opened to a single lane.

Part of the rockfall between Makarora and Lake Hawea was cleared on Saturday which allowed the road to reopen. Clearing work at the site will continue for the next few days and motorists can expect minor delays. The night time closure of the highway at the Diana Falls slip site, near Haast Pass, will continue.

Access from the Haast end of the highway will be closed from 4pm each day and at Makarora at 4.30pm. Both ends of the highway will reopen at 8.30am.
