Councillors' budget blown by travel
Southland District Council has blown the councillor's budget by more than $21,000, a report shows.
But the overspend is largely because of travel and accommodation associated with district plan hearings, which would usually be included in the district plan budget.
Council group manager financial and corporate services Bede Carran said the costs of travel and accommodation for resource management committee members during the district plan process had been included under expenditure for the ‘council and councillors' section of the budget instead of the district plan budget.
"To date, the district plan is well and truly under budget," Carran said.
Other costs that blew the budget included training for councillors involved with the district plan process, as well as training for new mayor Gary Tong.
The report shows the year-to-date expenditure budget until May 2014 for council and councillors was $681,736 but the amount spent was $703,084.
