The Southland District Council's new chief executive is Steve Ruru.
Ruru has been chief executive of Kaipara District Council for three years since being appointed to manage the fallout from a major cost overrun in a sewerage scheme.
Previously he was chief executive at the Thames-Coromandel District Council. Southland District Council mayor Gary Tong said he was excited about the appointment.
"Steve is a nationally respected chief executive with many years’ experience in local government and the broader public sector."
Ruru’s first day on the job in Southland will be October 20, Tong said.
Ruru replaces former Southland District Council chief executive Dave Adamson, who held the role for 10 years until leaving last month to take up a role with the Christchurch City Council to work on the rebuild.
