The Wallacetown Community Board is calling for an investigation into erosion of the Makarewa riverbank in the town.
Board chairman Shaun Holland said there had been subsidence in the river and that the bank next to Largs St had been disintegrating.
"It's getting closer to the road verge," he said.
Southland District Council Wallacetown area engineer had written to Environment Southland to flag the issue and request the council look at what needed to be done, he said.
"It may be as simple as planting willow or putting rocks in."
The community board was waiting to hear back from Environment Southland, and which council would be responsible for the cost of any remedial work might need to be discussed, Holland said.
