The Crown Range Rd between Queenstown and Wanaka has reopened after several motorists stuck in heavy snow this morning prompted its closure.

Queenstown Lakes District Council communications team member Andy Tebay said the road was still temporarily closed between Cardrona and Eastgate and contractors were working to clear the snow.

Chains must be carried on the road and motorists were urged to drive to the conditions.

Motorists could also use the alternative route via Cromwell.

Snow was expected to fall in the area today and tomorrow.
