Winds shake the south

Wild weather is wreaking havoc across the south, causing road closures and power outages.

Parts of Gore were without power for a period after stormy conditions caused power lines to clash together.

Powernet chief executive Jason Franklin said the outage was fixed very quickly but effected an unknown number of customers.

Outages were also recorded in Tapanui, Crookston, and Curio Bay due to the stormy conditions, he said.

Earlier in the day strong winds kept fire services busy assisting with downed lines in Mataura, loose roofing tiles at BP North road in Invercargill and a precariously perched tree at Fiver Rivers.

Motorists are advised to take care while travelling on southern roads with the high winds and rain making conditions difficult.

The Southland District Council has issued a road warning advisory cautioning people to drive to the conditions.

Three roads remain closed as well. They are Taramoa-West Plains Road is closed because of flooding.

The Ohai-Clifden Highway, between the Twinlaw Road and Scotts Gap Feldwick Road intersections because of a slip - a detour is in place.

Walker Road, Woodlands, between Waihopai Downs Rd and Fleming Rd, is closed until further notice due to a collapsed culvert/bridge.

Wind gusts of up to 120km an hour were forecast to rattle across the south this morning, and seas are forecast to become very high for a time with a southwest swell rising to 7 metres.

Slope Point to Shelter Point can expect southwest 45 knots, rising to 55 knots this morning, then easing to 35 knots everywhere late tonight.
