Queenstown's Remarkables skifield received so much snow last night it has had to delay its opening today.

Large booms as explosions were set off to clear areas of the field have been heard in the Wakatipu as skifield patrol works undertake avalanche control.

Ski area manager Ross Lawrence said between 30 centimetres and 40cm of snow landed last night, meaning almost 1 metre had fallen in the last week.

"The road is still on hold at the moment - we've just about finished work clearing it," he said about 8am.

It would be about another hour before the skifield could look at opening, he said.

The heavy snow on the hills surrounding Queenstown has also meant chains are essential on the Crown Range between Queenstown and Wanaka.

Chains are also to be carried on State Highway 85 between Alexandra and Ranfurly.
