Investigators will look into the cause of a fire that destroyed a container and a car in Bluff this afternoon.

Firefighters were called to Suir St after a container in a vacant lot caught fire.

Bluff Fire Brigade deputy chief Paul Taylor said the blaze was well-involved when firefighters arrived.

It was not clear how the fire started, but was not believed to be suspicious, Taylor said.

Fire investigators had been alerted for ''peace of mind'', he said.

John Thompson, who owned the container and lives in an adjacent property, said he had ''no bloody clue'' how the fire started.

He usually kept his ride-on mower in the container but was mowing the lawn when the fire started.

A car parked beside the container was also destroyed in the fire.
