Hip-hop, aerobics stars compete to the beat
Southland's hip-hop and aerobics dancing stars are out in force for the regional aerobic and hip-hop championships.
Today, about 200 competitors aged 8 to 20 will be vying to impress judges from Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin to earn a spot at the national competition next month.
Dance teacher Louise Horo said this was the first year the Southland regional competition had run separately from Otago, after that the Otago contingent split from the rest because they had so many people.
The Southland competition organisers were still expecting a decent turnout of supporters to cheer on the dancers, Horo said.
The event is the qualifying round for the national competition, held on September 20 and 21, which is also going to be held in Invercargill, she said.
"This time next month the rest of the country will be joining us."
The championships are on today at the Civic Theatre, Invercargill, from 8.30am.
