Elvis helps at rockin' good weekend
It was a rockin' good weekend for enthusiastic Southland dancers.
The Invercargill Rock'n'Roll Club's annual club competition was held on Saturday at the James Hargest College gymnasium.
Club president Karl Herman said dancers rocked the dance floor until 10pm in what was the largest event to date.
"It was a full on day," he said.
Winners were announced in several categories.
For the senior dancers, the competition was a warmup before the national championships, to be held in Invercargill over Labour Weekend, he said.
Every year the competition grew with more spectacular throws and routines as couples danced through genuine 1950s music, including plenty of Elvis.
Dancers of all ages, from six years to those in their early 60s, and about "30 or 40 couples" competed at the event.
Judges were surprised at the camaraderie between the junior competitors, which was not often seen in other clubs, Herman said.
"That's the culture of our club. It's warm and inviting. It's a great atmosphere." firstname.lastname@example.org
