Southern school students have danced, leapt and highly impressed.

The youngsters were the standouts at the Southland regional aerobic and hip-hop championships at the weekend.

Almost 200 contestants aged 8 to 20 stepped on-stage to show their dancing skills at the Civic Theatre on Saturday hoping to gain the top spots to reach the nationals.

OUTSTANDING: James Hargest College student Kate Harvey competes in the Southland regional aerobic and hip-hop championships at the weekend.

Judges from throughout the country chose 53 individuals and teams to compete in the national competition next month.

Dance teacher Lou Horo said the well-run regional competition boosted huge talent from Southland, with primary school students being the standouts of the day. "Primary school talent is very strong."

It had been a happy and competitive atmosphere and the dancing was to a high standard, she said.

Family and friends came out in force on Saturday to support the talented dancers at the theatre.

For the first time in three years, Invercargill will host the national competition, which will be held on September 20 and 21 at the Civic Theatre.
