SDC considering cap on dog numbers
The Southland District Council is considering a cap on dog numbers and increasing registration fees.
The council policy review committee decided to review the dog control policy and bylaw, but declined a request to partially fund dog control from rates yesterday.
A report from council environmental health manager Michael Sarfaiti suggested a number of new policies be included in the documents, including a cap on dog numbers, a financial incentive to neuter dogs, and changes to the way dog control is funded.
The committee decided dog control should continue to be 100 per cent funded from fees, despite a suggestion from Sarfaiti to introduce a 10 per cent ratepayer rates subsidy.
Because the recommendation was declined, the base registration fee will increase from $25 to $30.
