A Wanaka couple is set to climb Africa's highest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro, next week to raise funds for those living in poverty.

Raewyn Phipps and husband Damon Plimmer, an Anglican minister, will set off with seven others from Wellington and Australia, to raise funds for the charity "So They Can", where Phipps was a volunteer manager.

The pair will leave on Saturday on a mission to climb the 5895m mountain in Tanzania as part of a trek on the Shira Route.

Phipps said the charity works to alleviate poverty in Africa and it had set up a school, children's home, business school, clinic, educational farm, a teachers' training college as well as social businesses.

The aim was to educate both children and their families to help them become self-reliant, Phipps said.

"It's not a hand-out. It's a hand-up," she said.

The pair, who were both keen walkers and runners, had been training the Mt Iron loop in preparation for the trip.

Plimmer said it would be his first time going to Africa, while it was Phipps' third, and he was looking forward to seeing the projects that Phipps was so passionate about.

It was hoped the trip would raise $60,000.
