Southern Institute of Technology first-year nursing students are guiding Southlanders towards better health.

The students put on their annual health expo, My Health Rules, for the public to get free checkups on campus yesterday.

Nurse educator Jess Domigan said the students organised the event as a part of their course and incorporated leading Southland health issues, including bowel cancer and heart disease.

"They're giving people the tool-kit to improve their health."

The expo's name was based on the television show My Kitchen Rules, and with a tagline of "Your Recipe to Better Health", it was aimed at engaging with the public and teaching people about their health, Domigan said.

Free general health checks, including blood pressure and blood glucose tests, were available and 16 stalls spread around Hansen Hall highlighted various health issues.

Pensioner Stuart Mitchell, 75, was among those waiting for a free health check.

The expo had his seal of approval, because doctors' visits were far too expensive for people on pensions and his regular visits could cost up to $120 a month, he said.

"It's brilliant. It should be more often."
