The Department of Conservation this week won approval to carry out surveillance and research work in Fiordland's waters.
In its application to the Environment Southland consents committee the department sought a coastal permit to mount a series of expeditions, including pest control, site management and work in conjunction with central and local government agencies, including Environment Southland.
The primary ship to be used was the Southern Winds, which was based at Doubtful Sound and has a Safe Ship Management Certificate.
It was expected the work would take only between 15 to 35 days annually.
Other vessels would be used periodically.
Six submissions were lodged with the committee, four in support of the application, and two, from Cruising Milford Sound and Meridian Energy, wishing only to comment.
James Holloway, of Meridian, said the consent should only be valid for one vessel.
For anything above that the department should be required to secure further consents, Mr Holloway said.
Peter Egerton, of Cruising Milford Sound, said the consent application did not provide enough information on what fuel spillage equipment would be carried nor hull inspection requirements.
However, all submitters withdrew their right to be heard ahead of the meeting and the committee approved consent for a period of 20 years.
Cr Derek Angus said there was clear value in the work to both the Department of Conservation and the council.
