An MRI scan has revealed Invercargill heart transplant recipient Jessica Ricketts did not suffer a stroke 10 days ago, as feared.

Her relieved mother, Trudy Hardwick, said it appeared the plucky 14-year-old had insteadhad a severe reaction to her anti-rejection medication, which caused seizures.

Her recovery in Starship children's hospital in Auckland was expected to be much quicker than originally anticipated, Mrs Hardwick said.

"She's going forward in leaps and bounds now," she said.

"She's moving both sides really well and she stood up today although we had to help her and hold on to her."

She was eating, drinking and talking, although she had to think carefully about what she said beforehand.

Yesterday she was moved from the intensive care unit to a neurology ward and it was hoped she would return to the cardiac ward in a few days.

The new heart Jessica received after an emergency dash to Auckland in late June was going extremely well, Mrs Hardwick said.

"It couldn't be better. It's such a strong heart."

The family was looking forward to learning more about the donor.
