THE controversy over extra charges at Walter Peak highlighted the positives of the national cycleway, according to Cycle Tour Operators New Zealand chairman Tim de Jong.

"The great thing about the national cycleway going through this area is that demand for services other than high-country afternoon teas will increase," Mr de Jong said.

"Real Journeys will either up their game to satisfy this demand or another operator will set up in competition.

"You only have to look at the high number of quality food outlets on the Otago Rail Trail, as opposed to a few years ago, to envisage the future of services in the Von Valley," he said.

Real Journeys' decision to charge what they wanted had to be accepted, Mr de Jong said.

Tourism Industry Association New Zealand chief executive Tim Cossar yesterday contacted Real Journeys to clarify the situation.

"Our understanding is that the catering facilities at Walter Peak are set up to cater for the groups who arrive on the Earnslaw.

"However, with the establishment of a cycle trail that will mean more independent travellers ... Real Journeys is reviewing how they can best meet the needs of this sector of the market."
