Six escape house fire

Six agricultural contracting workers narrowly escaped a blaze that razed a house in Central Southland early this morning.

The men, all from the United Kingdom, were woken by smoke alarms in the Riverside Rd house, about 6km from Winton, soon after 3am.

Fire crews from Winton and Dipton arrived to find the house well-involved and there was little firefighters could do to save it.

Crews remained at the fire for about four hours leaving at 7.10am.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
