A 34-year-old Queenstown man appeared in the Queenstown District Court this afternoon in connection with a death in the resort town last night.
The man, who has interim suppression of name, is charged with assaulting a person unknown by punching him.
Sergeant Keith Newell, of Queenstown, opposed bail, saying that while the defendant had no previous convictions, the charge related to a serious matter.
No application for bail was made and the defendant was remanded in custody to appear in the Invercargill District Court on November 27.
Police were called to a taxi stand in Camp St about 11.30pm following a report of a man lying unconscious there.
"In spite of attempts by police, members of the public and ambulance staff, the man could not be resuscitated and died at the scene,'' Senior Sergeant John Fookes, of Queenstown, said said.
The victim was described as a middle aged Caucasian who police were unable to immediately identify.
Mr Fookes said police wanted to hear from anyone who may have witnessed an altercation on Camp St late last night.
The street was cordoned off and likely to be closed for most of today. – NZPA
