"Thyme" was called yesterday on this year's Central Otago community arts festival.

The sun blazed during the final day of the Alexandra Thyme Festival, which has been running for decades in one form or another.

The week-long event, revamped eight years ago to combine the arts with environmental concerns, included more than 25 free workshops, a dozen artists, music and crafts.

Invercargill-based artist Russell Beck unveiled his $10,000 commission at the weekend.

The stainless steel sculpture, entitled Forces Within the Dunstan, is based on the geology of the region, weighs a quarter of a tonne and took 120 hours to build.

It will be displayed on a plinth in Pioneer Park.

Proceeds from the nonprofit festival go towards next year's art commission.
