Senior city residents are set for a Christmas treat, courtesy of the Invercargill Licensing Trust.
The trust is extending an open invitation to those 70 and older to attend their Senior Citizens' Christmas Dinner, to be held at the Ascot Park Hotel on December 7 and 8.
The dinner has been held annually since 1990. Initially held on only one night with 450 guests, the dinner has proved so popular in the past that it was decided to double the size of the event several years ago.
Trust sales and marketing manager Gary Muir said the event was important to the trust.
"It's a small way the trust can acknowledge and thank its valued senior shareholders.
"The over-70s age group have supported their trust – because it's their trust, it belongs to the people of Southland – for a long time, and it's a tangible way the trust can say thank you to them," he said.
The dinner will be "three courses of scrumptious Christmas fare" and was likely to be accompanied by a few festive drinks, Mr Muir said.
A variety of entertainment was still being finalised, and was usually kept secret from attendees until the event.
The cost of the two dinners is funded by the trust, and is about $40,000.
Those wanting to attend have to apply in writing for themselves and a guest.
The letter must include the names, addresses (including post codes), and phone numbers of both applicants. Applications close today and 900 names will be randomly drawn on Friday.
