A group of United States school pupils was running rampant in Invercargill yesterday, tearing around city streets on their own Amazing Race.
The group of 18 pupils, aged 12 to 14 from Meeker Middle School, in Tacoma, Washington, are on a three-week visit to New Zealand as part of an exchange programme with James Hargest College.
Organiser of the race and host parent Reece Mulligan said the aim of the race was to introduce the pupils to as much "Kiwiana" as possible in one hit.
During the race the participants were tasked with buying cheese rolls and a milkshake, and to visit some of Invercargill's prominent sights, including the water tower and fire museum, he said.
The Amazing Race format was a natural fit because of the New Zealand and United States connection in the television programme, which was hosted by Kiwi Phil Keoghan, Mr Mulligan said.
One of the pupils, Jacob Hinkle, said the race was a great way to get to know the city. The entire trip had been an exciting adventure, he said.
James Hargest pupils will make a return exchange to the United States towards the end of the year.
