Hawea toddlers and preschoolers are set to enjoy a new playground, thanks to the efforts of Anna Bankshaw.

Ms Bankshaw earned praise from Wanaka Community Board members yesterday after raising almost $8000 to fund an innovative playground for children under the age of 4.

The playground will feature a macrocarpa tractor, timber climbing steps, a play hut and slide. It will be the first stage in an overall redevelopment of the Lake Hawea Playground in Capell Ave.

Queenstown Lakes District Council project manager Annabel Riley said in a report to yesterday's meeting that Ms Bankshaw had approached the council last year requesting improvements to the existing playground, which although suitable for older children had limited opportunities for toddlers.

After being told there was no money available she fundraised for the upgrade, gaining support from the Hawea Community Association, businesses and families.

Speaking at yesterday's meeting, Ms Bankshaw said Plunket statistics showed there were 92 children under 3 1/2 years of age in the Hawea area.

The playground, to be built with volunteer labour, would encourage youngsters to be social and interactive.

"There are 2000 people living in Hawea and the area is a special family holiday destination.

"It will be great that children who are crawling and learning to walk can use this," she said.
