Biscuit manufacturer Griffin's is receiving complaints from throughout the country about the quality of its Girl Guide biscuits, but southerners do not seem to mind if their bikkies are a bit blemished.

Girl Guides chief executive Ruth Teasdale said the product had not been recalled "but it looks like there was a problem where the mix was a bit dry in the biscuits that went to Johnsonville".

Griffin's would be testing biscuits to see if there were problems with biscuits in other areas of the country.

Girl Guiding New Zealand marketing and advocacy manager Jane Smithson said the biscuits did not taste any different, but some were misshapen and others were browner than usual.

"Griffin's have assured us there is no problem with the taste, it's just to do with the appearance of the biscuits."

The Girl Guides badge imprint was not visible on some of the biscuits – some people's favourite part.

"Sometimes people like to nibble around the badge before they dunk it in their coffee," she said. Despite this, sales had been going well and had not been affected by this "hiccup". This was because the main reason people bought the biscuits was to support Girl Guides.

"The thing is is it gets girls out and doing fun stuff so really it is a donation more than anything else, we are a registered charity," she said.

Southland Girl Guiding district co-ordinator Jane King said, in fact, this year had seen record sales of the biscuits in the south, with 600 boxes sold in the past six days and the plain biscuits being completely sold out.

"Normally it takes about six weeks to sell that many biscuits."

There were about 93,000 packs of Girl Guide biscuits on sale this year, about 2800 of which were sold in Southland. Of these, about 46 per cent of the sales were the affected plain biscuits.

Griffin's is offering to exchange packs of the defective plain biscuits for two packs of chocolate Girl Guides biscuits or a Griffin's voucher.

One pack of biscuits had been returned in Invercargill, Ms Smithson said.

ewwwww!!!! I recently bought a packet of girl guide biscuits from Albany. Took it to work for morning tea opened it and ate about 4 biscuits and to my horror I noticed what it looked like little eggs held together by a fine web!!!! so i looked at it under a microscope and YUCK!!!! it looked so gross it put us all off our food. So I rang Griffens they told me to send the biscuits back. One of my work mates told me to take another biscuits out to see what we would find and OMG, bloody hell a frigan MAGGOT!!!!!! was wriggling about!!!! I was dry reaching for about 5 minutes and will definitely send this back to them.

The biscuits I bought (chocolate coated) were just great, what's all the fuss about? Is there no "news" out there to report?
