Invercargill's "Tower of Love" has officially lived up to its name.
Noel and Hilary Atley spent Thursday night perched 40m above the ground in the city's historic water tower after winning a Trade Me auction for a lavish night for two in Venture Southland's "Tower of Love" promotion last month.
The Atleys' evening began with an hour and a half of pampering at Beauty and Beyond before they arrived at the tower about 7pm.
In the tower the couple were treated to a romantic dinner cooked by a chef from Ascot Park Hotel's Emberz Restaurant, followed by a "love cake" for dessert from Sticky Beak Cafe.
The Atleys were then left to retire to their luxury camp bed from E Hayes and Sons, made with special linen from H&J Smith.
Mr Atley said he felt very privileged to be one of the only two people to ever sleep in the tower.
"It's a great big area up there ... with beautiful views of the city as the sun was going down."
The experience was made even more memorable when Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt delivered the couple their gourmet continental breakfasts yesterday morning.
Mrs Atley said they had a wonderful time and she wanted to thank all the businesses and people who helped make it happen.
"We had a great night. It's an amazing building," she said.
The couple's winning bid was $1670, with proceeds from the auction being donated to the New Zealand Cancer Society.
The Venture Southland promotion echoed one by SkyCity Auckland offering a Valentines Day package, where two people had the chance to spend a night at the top of the Sky Tower.
