The Wanaka Community Board has approved a new site for a dog pound in the town.
The existing dog pound is next to the oxidation ponds in Ballantyne Rd, which are in the process of being decommissioned.
Lakes Property Services agent Dan Egerton said the pound was no longer functional and was cold in winter.
The pound will now be at Riverbank Rd, subject to getting a resource consent approval.
The proposed pound would include five dog compartments, a fenced exercise yard and an isolation unit.
It would also contain a toilet, shower, handbasin, refrigerator and food preparation unit.
At the Wanaka Community Board meeting this week Riverbank residents Jo Dippie and Angus Gordon were opposed to the pound being sited there.
"Who the hell wants to hear yapping dogs ... the airport is by far the more logical site," Mr Gordon said.
