A monster garage sale in Bluff on Saturday has helped raise more than $3000 to go towards the $1.1 million needed to save the community's swimming pool.
The garage sale, held at the scout hall, was so successful organisers are already planning another for next month.
Organiser Sandra Johnson said the next sale was scheduled for April 24 in a bigger location, at the town hall.
Bargain hunters had been so keen to get in they were lining up from 8.30am, even though the doors were not meant to open until 10am, she said. "People were even willing to pay a bit more for an item than what it had been priced at because it was for such a good cause."
It was also encouraging to see so many shoppers who had come from Invercargill, she said.
Bluff's pool was a vital part of the community and needed to be saved.
"Imagine what Bluff kids would do if there was no swimmingpool here," Mrs Johnson said.
The Invercargill City Council plans to close the pool unless $1.1m can be raised to save it.
Meanwhile, the Bluff Community Board has proposed establishing an independent charitable trust to take over ownership of the pool.
The council will simultaneously consult on that and on a proposal for a Southland-wide solid waste collection service, with a decision expected to be made before June 30.
