Free budgeting workshops

The answers to Southlanders' financial woes could be near with The Southland Times and a budget advisory group teaming up to provide free budget workshops next week.
Jubilee Budget Advisory Service manager Simon Tierney, who is running the workshops, said anyone would benefit from making a budget, no matter what economic situation people were in.
"You don't need to be in financial strife to think about starting one."
Creating a budget was not hard and there were basic rules to follow, with good planning and prioritised spending, Mr Tierney said.
"The key needs for anyone are food, power and a place to live."
The aims of the workshops were to give sound advice to anyone who wanted it and provide the tools for people to start their own budgets and, equally important, stick to them, he said.
"A good budget will save money and minimise debt. Who doesn't want to do that?"
It was hoped by arming people with knowledge, the word would spread to the wider community, Mr Tierney said.
No-one would be asked to stand up and describe their own personal situation and people could just listen in if they chose to, he said.
Southland Times general manager Gareth Codd said the reason for joining forces with Jubilee came from readers and subscribers wanting more from the newspaper.
The paper had an obligation to provide its community with information to help day-to-day living, he said.
The workshops will be held at Stadium Southland on March 24 and will be in two sessions, between noon and 2pm, or between 7pm and 9pm. Attendance is free but registration is required.
To register for a place on one of the free seminars, text the word "Budget'' followed by your name, phone number and which session you’ll be attending, to 4554 or phone us on 0800 784 846.
