Spirit of St Paddy celebrated a day early

The craic was mighty in Alexandra yesterday when RSA Bowling Club members got into the spirit of St Patrick's Day earlier than most.
About 100 club members, many in fancy dress, turned out for an annual match in the town's District Club grounds.
Bowlers decked out in tricolours, shamrocks, hats, wigs and pants – all in traditional green – vied for the coveted prize of "best outfit".
Alexandra RSA tournament secretary Heather Arthur said the annual bash was great fun.
"It's quite popular. Everybody joins in the spirit."
However, Guinness was not among the prizes for the day, she said.
Monteith's brewery and bar in Centennial Ave was planning a themed menu, with potato, pea and bacon soup followed by more spuds, this time in cake form with bacon, today. Monteith's manager John Alabaster said he expected a sizeable crowd after last year, when more than 100 diners sat down for an Irish-themed meal.
However, Fat Badger assistant manager Tracy Washington said last year's St Patrick's Day was disappointing.
The bar had hired a band and opened its door early but few people arrived for a full Irish breakfast.
She did not expect hordes of expats or descendants of settlers from the Emerald Isle to materialise. But Guinness would be available, she said.
