World Cup-winning cyclist Tom Scully and Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt might seem an unlikely sporting partnership, but they will team up for the New Zealand University Games in Invercargill next month.
Scully, a member of the New Zealand track cycling team heading to Denmark for next week's world championships, and Shadbolt will pair up in the lawn bowls section of the Uni Games, which run from April 13 to 16.
"Now that I'm 63 my old rugby injuries are catching up with me, so I decided to engage in the more sedate sport of bowls," Shadbolt said.
"I was once the under-12 champion of my local Baptist Church Youth Club, so I'm hoping muscle memory will kick in."
Shadbolt and Scully, who played lawn bowns at high school, are both studying SIT2LRN distance learning programmes, making them eligible for the Games.
Shadbolt is studying towards the certificate in internet and web pages, while Scully is working on a certificate in sports training and development.
SIT team manager Tracy Simpson said it was the first time the institute had been represented at the Uni Games and its southernmost competitors were shaping up well.
"SIT is looking forward to having a strong team of over 100 at the games, including the likes of Eddie Dawkins, Tom Scully and, of course, Mayor Tim," she said.
