The Independent Police Conduct Authority yesterday confirmed the organisation is aware of two matters involving officers in Central Otago and Southland.

The Southland Times reported this week that an Alexandra-based officer was stood down from duty on full pay about two weeks ago, pending the outcome of an internal inquiry that started in December.

A Gore-based officer, in a separate case, was suspended from duty in October on fraud charges.

An IPCA spokeswoman said yesterday when the authority received a complaint a separate investigation could be started alongside police inquiries. But in the Central Otago and Gore cases the authority was content to wait for police to finish their investigation and court proceedings to wind up.

Its oversight role included reviewing or auditing police inquiries once they were finished.

An IPCA decision to launch an investigation, if any, would be made once the inquiries were over.
