Children at Woodlands School are on their way to receiving new playground equipment, thanks to the creative and stylish efforts of their dads and other men in the community.
The inaugural Miss Woodlands contest was held at the Woodlands Rugby clubrooms on Saturday night.
In the tongue-in-cheek competition, 10 usually upstanding male members of the community dressed in drag to fight for the coveted Miss Woodlands title.
The event, which included wearable arts, eveningwear, and bedroomwear sections, was a fundraiser for the school's playground upgrade.
Co-organiser Monique Smith said the evening, which was enjoyed by a sellout crowd of 150, had been a laugh.
About $5000 was raised for the playground equipment, putting the school well on its way towards the $15,000 it needed, Mrs Smith said.
Photographs from the night would be used in a second fundraising activity – a Miss Woodlands calendar, which was expected to be launched in October, she said.
The evening's top prize went to the National Bank's Grant Dermody, who dazzled the crowd with his vivid blue evening dress complete with shiny blue wig and bright-blue eye makeup, Mrs Smith said.
Other men also impressed, including some who had waxed, spray-tanned, and donned false eyelashes, she said.
"The effort ... was awesome."
