Calvary Hospital staff and residents rocked up to last night's trans-Tasman netball encounter at Stadium Southland like movie stars.
About 15 Steel fans – mostly of the elderly variety – packed into limousines and headed to the game thanks to Steel's No1 fan Bev Harvey, who is the activities officer at the hospital. Ms Harvey was interviewed at work last year for Sky Television's On Court netball programme, and decided it would be a fantastic idea to take a group of residents out to experience the excitement of a Southern Steel netball game.
Ms Harvey and a group of helpers helped make hats and scarves for the fans, who she said were in the 80 to 96 age bracket. They also helped do the women's hair and gave them a pampering to get them ready for the big match.
The residents hand-made cards to raise money for the limousines and some wine and refreshments.
Ms Harvey said it had been an exciting day for the hospital residents.
"It was a hyped-up day for them. We did all their personal makeup and pampered them to bits," she said. Valerie OBrien, 81, who experienced her first Steel game and limousine ride, said it had been excellent day apart from the game's final result.
"It was my first Steel game so I was thrilled.
"I had a facial and they've done all my hair. It's absolutely tremendous."
Florence Owens, 92, was also attending her first ANZ Championship match, and said it had been a wonderful night. "It's been good. I've been through the stadium once before, but there was no-one here. It's my first proper game here."
Ms Harvey said she hoped to get more residents along to Steel's next match at Stadium Southland, against Magic on May 24.

What a truly remarkable woman Bev Harvey is, I take my hat of to her. We could do with a lot more of her. Everyone looks like they had a wonderful time and Bev looks fab in her outfit.
