Solar blast could light night sky

Southern stargazers could be in for a show with a blast of solar gas creating the possibility of the Southern Lights or aurora australis being seen in the south tonight.

The massive solar flares were recorded by several satellites on Sunday including NASA's new Solar Dynamics Observatory which watched its shockwave rippling outwards.

They were expected to strike New Zealand today.
